Actually, it is a great contrast of heat and sweet, bite after bite. This soul food southern kitchen in Lincoln Square will grab the attention of any person who’s apprehensive about the idea of chicken and waffles. Muse bought his South Shore apartment in 1971; his building, an austere gray-stone mansion with a curled driveway, built in 1926, overlooked the country club grounds. Muse Waffle House on South Vincennes (which later in the day, doubled as a rib joint); after moving to South Shore, when the restaurant closed at night, he would invite friends and employees back to his condo. Many of the bars and nightclubs in the neighborhood then were white-owned, and as his brother Robert said, Isaiah’s guests were old enough to have known Jim Crow firsthand — they would rather have a house party. Chef Giuseppe Tentori, of Boka fame, has his hands in a variety of things.
The Lakefront Trail is packed, and I’ve got a warm headwind out of the south, but the weather is so gorgeous I don’t mind. By the time I reach 63rd Street Beach, my stomach is growling, so I detour south on Jeffrey Boulevard into South Shore towards a dinner destination. And maybe Chicago’s 24-hour dining niche was already filled by the many “Golden” coffee shops, including “Nugget,” “Apple,” and “Angel,” not to mention our many awesome late-night taquerias. During the last several miles into Avon on trails and subdivision streets at twilight, I eagerly anticipate the feast that awaits me. Then suddenly the Waffle House appears like a lighthouse in the night, looking exactly like every other branch I’ve visited on southern road trips.
Indiana is the less urban, more conservative mirror image of Illinois, and as I zigzag southeast on farm roads, the scenery soon resembles a typical Prairie State landscape. Nevertheless, on Friday, May 14, after work, I depart my home in Uptown for the 70-mile trek to the summer house in Beverly Shores. It’s going to be a late night, but about 80 percent of the route is on bike paths. And when a buddy invited me to his bachelor party this month at another friend’s summer house in the Indiana Dunes, roughly on the way, that sealed the deal.

Isaiah Muse was born in 1919; he would have turned 100 last month. He grew up in Boley, Okla., which was founded in 1903, and for a time the richest predominantly black town in the country, a model of ambition, business savvy and class mobility. Its decline — tied to the Great Depression and the bankruptcy of the Oklahoma-Arkansas railroad — began a decade later, and coincided with Muse reaching his teens. The Muse family owned a farm that harvested cotton and corn; they had nine boys and girls. On Jan. 1, 1877, sections of the temple — including the baptistry, a second-floor assembly room and an upper-level sealing room — were dedicated by Church leaders, with temple ordinances beginning within the next 10 days. The temple ordinances — old and new — were recorded, reviewed and approved over the next several months. Wilford Woodruff recorded that during the St. George temple’s first year of operation, almost 25,000 baptisms for the dead, 12,000 endowments and 3,800 sealings were performed.

The new north addition has exterior walls created of precast concrete, which are covered with a light sand and white epoxy paint to match the color and texture of the historic building. Following a second major renovation project, the St. George Utah Temple nearly doubled its 56,062 square feet. It was opened to the public for an open house and formally rededicated in 1975.

About a year after Brigham Young's death, on October 16, 1878, a large storm rolled through St. George and a lightning bolt struck the tower of the temple, making it necessary to reconstruct the tower and dome. Brigham Young's feelings about the tower were well known and a new design was made for the tower, making it taller. The Los Angeles California Temple closed for 10 weeks in its 25th anniversary year, 1981, for remodeling and refurbishment. The addition of two rooms and audio visual equipment allowed sessions to begin every half hour in a stationary motion-picture presentation of the endowment. The Los Angeles California Temple was the first temple to include a priesthood assembly room and angel Moroni statue following the Salt Lake Temple. The spacious assembly room seats about 2,000 and features three pulpits on each end.
The new windows match the historic profiles and details of the original windows but have been upgraded to incorporate thermally insulated triple panes of glass. A new skylight has also been provided in the bride’s room area, using the quatrefoil motif as the basis of design. This skylight will also employ decorative art glass at the room’s ceiling level. After finishing the foundation, work finally began on the structure itself.
